The candidates for Cheek Fillers are people with a flat or narrow face with week cheek structure (including lost contour in the cheeks).

Your surgeon will also perform diagnostic examinations and/or laboratory investigations prior to hospital admission and surgery. This is to ensure that you are fit for surgery. This is in line with standard hospital procedure.

General anesthesia is administered for this procedure. Cheek Fillers is often performed in conjunction with other cosmetic surgeries such as brow lifts, rhinoplasty and eyelid lifts. If this is the case, the cheek implants can be inserted via the incisions made for those procedures. If Cheek Augmentation is only being performed, implants are inserted via a small incision made via the mouth (above the teeth, within the fold where the gum meets the upper lip). A small tunnel is then created under the tissues of the cheek and the underlying bone. The implant is then inserted over the cheekbone. Using absorbable stitches, the incision is closed.

There is risk in all surgical procedures and it is important that you are aware of the risks involved in your procedure before going ahead with the surgery. During your appointments you should discuss any concerns with your surgeon and not be afraid to ask questions. Your surgery will be unable to proceed unless you sign a pre-surgery consent form.

It is also your obligation to advise your surgeon of any important medical information that could affect your surgery and/or increase your levels of risk. The type of medical information that you should disclose includes medical complications, previous surgeries, current and recent medications and family disease. Given some links between the consumption of tobacco, antidepressants and anesthesia complications, it is important that patients disclose any use of these substances to their surgeon prior to the procedure.

Risks of Cheek Augmentation procedures are scarring and nerve damage.

Possible side effects of this procedure include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Infection(usually can be treated via antibiotics)
  • Misalignment of a cheek implant can result in movement that results in asymmetry. This can sometimes mean that a second procedure is required to realign the implant.
  • Returning to work: At the patient’s discretion
  • High impact activity: 3-4 weeks
  • Scars will fade: Within the year
